Jobs and infrastructure

The NSW Government’s record $62.9 billion investment in infrastructure over the next four years will contribute to providing first class transport, housing, education and health care facilities, and will help to secure energy and water supplies. The Government’s four year infrastructure program represents the largest infrastructure investment program in the State’s history, and will support up to 160,000 jobs a year.

Major infrastructure investment over the four years includes:

  • public transport, including $2.7 billion towards the Sydney Metro, $804 million for the South West Rail Link and $935 million for the Rail Clearways program
  • road infrastructure, including $3.2 billion for the Pacific Highway, $1.5 billion for the Hunter Expressway and $1 billion for the Southern Hume duplication and bypasses
  • completion of the Sydney Desalination Project in 2010 and ongoing construction of the Tillegra dam (for completion in 2014)
  • education infrastructure including $2.9 billion for the Building the Education Revolution Program, $176 million for the Digital Education Revolution Program and around $600 million each year for schools and TAFE colleges
  • $4.3 billion for projects delivering an estimated 9,000 new social housing dwellings and upgrades of existing homes
  • major hospital redevelopments including Liverpool Hospital, Orange Bloomfield Hospital and the Royal North Shore Hospital.

The Government is also investing in additional targeted programs to support jobs throughout the State, including:

  • the $35 million NSW Community Building Partnership for local infrastructure projects, with additional funding for areas of higher unemployment
  • the $200 million Local Infrastructure Fund, providing interest free loans to councils to bring forward new investment in local infrastructure
  • introducing the ($64 million) Housing Construction Acceleration Plan, providing a 50 per cent cut in stamp duty for purchasers of newly constructed dwellings up to $600,000, excluding first home buyers
  • continuing support for first home buyers by extending the $3,000 First Home Owner Supplement to 30 June 2010, as well as continuing the generous existing program of stamp duty exemptions valued up to $17,990 and the $7,000 First Home Owner Grant
  • providing preferred treatment to more than 500,000 NSW small and medium businesses, under the NSW Government’s Local Jobs First plan
  • establishing the $85 million five-year Building the Country Package, to assist country businesses and communities through local infrastructure initiatives and support for local chambers of commerce, country halls and libraries.
